Local history

Because of the number of historical sites between Fethiye and Kas we have focused on sites within reach of Kalkan.

Xanthos

The ruins of this Lycian capital dating back to 1200 BC lie in a splendid natural setting.   A Roman theatre can also be seen here.

Xanthos Valley

This wide and fertile valley was the heartland of Lycia where little visited and sometimes overgrown settlements can be explored.   Visit Tlos with its Roman city and crusader castle then onto Pinara where magnificent rock tombs and other ancient sites can be found.

Further South in the Lycian sanctuary of Letoon lie the ruins of temples dedicated to Lycian Gods.

Patara

Once an important harbour of ancient Lycia its ruins are numerous with many priceless monuments scattered around fields and sand dunes.   Patara is also the birthplace of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus).

This area also boasts a magnificent beach of pure sand stretching for over 10 miles. Development is banned here and is also an important area for the preservation of the endangered Loggerhead Turtle.

Kekova (Sunken City)

Travel by boat to the ancient city of Kekova where as a result of 4th century earthquakes the mostly submerged remains can be seen through crystal clear waters.   Then cross the bay to the beautiful traditional village of Kale with its imposing crusader castle surveying the area.
