KalkanLocated on the Turquoise coast of Turkey and with the soaring Taurus Mountains as a backdrop, lies the postcard pretty village of Kalkan. Set in the centre of the ancient Lycian Kingdom this simple fishing village has retained much of its character. Walking down the narrow alleyways you will find yourself in a maze of old whitewashed houses with rickety wooden balconies overhanging with flowering plants and brilliant bougainvillaea. As you wind down the alleyways you come across the glorious harbour where beautiful traditional gulets and luxury yachts moor up for the evening. Tied up amongst the fishing boats are smaller gulets which are available for sole charter. These gulets will take you to crystal clear coves where you can swim and soak up the sun. An experienced captain is always on hand and a cook will ensure you have freshly cooked meals throughout the day. For the gentlemen a visit to a local barber is a must for that legendary shave. Also a trip to one of the more upmarket hotels will enable you to experience a traditional Turkish bath and massage. At the top end of Kalkan is a taxi rank and a dolmus (mini bus) station, which offers a regular service to Fethiye, Kas and mountain villages. There is also a bank and nearby post office where travellers cheques and currency can be exchanged. The people of Kalkan are incredibly friendly and helpful and a return visit would surely see you welcomed as long lost family.
